Health Policy Update: SB 187 Postponed to Tuesday

Posted almost 8 years ago by Rebecca Thibodaux

The bill was not heard today since several yes votes had to leave the chamber. In addition, we have amendments to revise. The bill is now scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, May 31, 2016. This bill needs your immediate personal phone call to increase YES votes.

90% of representatives stated they had not heard from any NPs. (We know that you've called.) This means that simply calling the legislative office and emails is not enough. Its time to get assertive!

Please do the following: Contact YOUR legislator in your district.

  1. If you do not have access to the Representative's cell phone number, Call the legislative office and ask to speak directly to your representative. If they cannot be reached, ask for their cell phone number, if they cannot provide this, ask for a three-way party call.

  2. Explain this is the most important bill they will vote on this legislative session and you need to speak with them today before the holiday weekend. Make sure you state you are a voting constituent in their district and include the number of patients cared for by you in their district.

Additional points to share: Amendments are being added to SB 187 to meet the legislators concerns.

NPs are not supervised.

NPs have a different scope of practice than physicians and are regulated by the LA State Board of Nursing.

Did you know there is no increase in NP malpractice insurance costs in full practice states?

This bill is not about scope of practice, the same patient care provided now, will be the same care provided after the collaborative practice agreement restriction is removed.

Be persistent, speak directly to you representative and ask them for their support.

If their response is no, you may express your disappointment in their decision and thank the representative for the time and consideration of SB 187.

Lastly, thank you for your patience while we work to get the most up to date, accurate information to you in a timely manner. And thank you for all your hard work! We HAVE to keep pushing forward!

Keep in contact with us and let us know if you are able to speak with your legislator. office@lanp.org
